Project Overview
Large residential
shingle replacement.
Rivers Construction completed a large residential shingle replacement on this Colchester home, installing Owens Corning Duration shingles with a comprehensive ice and water shield protection system throughout the entire roof.
The project required precise coordination across a large footprint, including full tear-off, deck inspection, and a complete new roofing system installed to manufacturer specifications with every detail handled by our own crew.
- Full shingle tear-off and disposal
- Roof deck inspection and any needed repairs
- Comprehensive ice & water shield protection
- Synthetic underlayment throughout
- Owens Corning Duration architectural shingles
- New ridge cap and ventilation

What We Did
A full roofing system,
done right.
On a large residential replacement, there's no shortcut that doesn't eventually cost more. The materials are too expensive, the surface area too large, and the installation too involved to recover from compromised prep work. Here's what Rivers Construction delivered on this Colchester home — from the deck up.
Full Tear-Off and Deck Inspection
The project started with a complete tear-off of the existing roofing system down to the structural sheathing. Every square foot of the deck was inspected for rot, delamination, and soft spots before the new system was installed. Damaged or waterlogged sections were replaced rather than covered over — a step many contractors skip because it adds time and material cost. It's also the step that determines whether the rest of the installation is built on a solid foundation or a compromised one.
Comprehensive Ice & Water Shield
Ice and water shield was installed comprehensively — at all eaves, up every valley, and around every penetration on the roof. Vermont homes are exposed to significant ice dam pressure during winter and spring thaw cycles: water backs up behind ice formations at the eaves and can work its way under shingles and through minor gaps in less protected roofing systems. A thorough ice and water shield installation is the primary defense against this, and on a large-footprint home there's simply more perimeter exposure that requires careful coverage.
Synthetic Underlayment Throughout
Synthetic underlayment was installed over the full roof deck as a secondary water barrier beneath the shingles. Unlike traditional asphalt felt, synthetic underlayment doesn't absorb moisture, won't wrinkle or buckle during installation, and maintains its integrity through repeated temperature cycles without becoming brittle. On a large roof where installation spans multiple days, it also provides better weather protection between the tear-off and shingle installation phases.
Owens Corning Duration Shingles
Owens Corning Duration architectural shingles were installed across the full roof — a product specified for its SureNail Technology reinforced nailing zone, which dramatically improves shingle holding strength through high winds and the thermal movement Vermont roofs experience across seasons. Duration shingles carry a limited lifetime warranty for the original homeowner and are backed by Owens Corning's manufacturer warranty program. Their dimensional profile provides a clean, substantial finished appearance that resists premature aging in Vermont's UV and freeze-thaw environment.
Ridge Ventilation and Finish Details
New ridge ventilation was installed along the full ridge line as part of the complete system. Proper attic ventilation is directly connected to shingle lifespan and ice dam prevention — an under-ventilated attic creates uneven roof deck temperatures that accelerate granule loss and promote ice formation at the eaves. New ridge cap was installed to complete the system, and all penetration flashings were replaced to manufacturer specification.
